FAQ

  • Can I record my band in your studio?
  • We are a post-production studio, not a traditional recording studio. As such, we do not have (nor do we need) a fully sound-treated environment for recording live instruments such as drums or brass. However, we are fully capable of capturing a guitar, bass, scratch vocal, or synth to augment your existing tracks or for writing and arranging purposes. We have a full suite of software and hardware tools to take your project from initial thought to fruition, or just for mixing and mastering.
  • Can you work with audio files produced at home or at another studio?
  • Yes, in fact we are almost always working with existing files or stems or mixes that were generated somewhere else. We always suggest that you get the highest possible audio exported from other environments to use as our starting point.
  • Can you fix a youtube video that needs the audio corrected?
  • Yes, as long as the video is your own material, we can use it to make whatever corrections are needed.
  • Can you fix any audio, regardless of how bad it is?
  • Please keep in mind that there are limits to how much you can improve the original material. We can almost always make things a lot better, but you will not always be able to transform badly damaged or very poorly recorded audio into pristine audio. Our normal procedure is to discuss the expectations for your project with you once we do analysis, so that the deliverables are not a surprise.
  • I have to work under tight deadlines and need a partner that can do the same. How long will it take to get my project back to me?
  • This question most often arises with broadcast projects (ie: TV, Radio, Streaming) which must adhere to strict deadlines. We always work with you to ensure that your timelines are met, and we try to establish a schedule that will accomplish that, understanding that things don’t always go according to plan. For TV projects that may mean turnaround times in hours and minutes. For music projects that may mean a finished product in time for a submission, or an event. We make sure that we are in sync with you as the client up front, and then we ensure excellent communication throughout the process.
  • Where are you located?
  • We are a global service, so geography is secondary as long as you have Internet service for file transfers and audio/video collaboration. That said, we have staff in St Andrew, Grenada, and Los Angeles, CA. This allows us to cover a broad range of time zones, and to work beyond typical business hours.
  • How do you get large audio/video files to and from clients?
  • We utilise Google, Dropbox, and FTP for large file transfers. For small and medium sized files, email works. With that said, we have found that in many cases during a project, a link is all that is needed for reviews and editing sessions. This allows the use of email, Whatsapp, and Google Meet as long as all parties are comfortable with that. For larger or more complex projects, we use a project management solution to store files, capture communications, and track deliverables.
  • How do you handle music projects which are confidential, or which need protection of intellectual property?
  • We tackle confidentiality and protection of you intellectual property in two ways. First of all, we treat EVERY project as confidential. This means that Somata Audio shares nothing except with the client or with those that the client has explicity authorised. Our systems utilize state of the art data security and protection from both Google and Amazon. Second, we are members of ASCAP, and Sound Exchange, so if you are utilizing our publishing and distribution services, your IP is globally protected. If you have specific needs, we will further work with you to ensure compliance.
  • Do you handle video projects?
  • Yes, although our specialty is audio, and that is our focus, we work extensively with video projects that need audio treatment. In order to do that, we maintain some basic video tools, but we are not a video editing shop, and we do not solicit video work.
  • Can you produce some original background music or ambient sound for my advertisement/video or blend it with existing voiceover audio?
  • Yes. We have original instrumental music tracks which can be added to your video, or we can create music and/or Ad jingles to meet your needs. This type of work is the natural intersection of our audio and music production service lines.
